Langhe Piedmont Italy

Scenery, Wine, Food and Friends

The area that lies between Alba to the north and Ceva to the south is known as the Langhe – which literally means ‘the tongues’, probably because the hills jut out like tongues, or there are other theories.

Romantic Roero

Hill Top Castles, Fabulous Food & World Famous Wines

The Roero is by far the smallest of these big Piedmont areas. It’s principle town is Canale, a gem in itself. During the 2006 Winter Olympics Bill Gates stayed there. I doubt he was aware of the great wines of this region before coming but probably got peanuts on his flight.

The Roero is small but special. You will see why Bill chose it. It’s not too far from Turin, has beautiful landscapes and hidden towns filled with great people. Let’s start with Canale. |  Read more

Beautiful Monferrato

History, Magnificant Towns, Warm Hospitality

The main town of the Monferrato is Asti. It’s a cool name as everyone has heard of it. Asti Spumanti? It’s a big town with a small town mentality, and that’s a good thing.

The main town of the Monferrato is Asti. It’s a cool name as everyone has heard of it. Asti Spumanti? It’s a big town with a small town mentality, and that’s a good thing. The centre is typical Italian storia. Elaborate architecture making impressive shopping streets. There’s a huge market on Wednesdays and Saturdays. It’s in two parts – clothes etc and the lower part food and household stuff. You can buy a half kilo of Grana Padano cheese and a generator. Or a pair of Italian shoes and light bulb. Every summer they have the Sagre – a feast of food from local towns in the Monferrato. |  Read more

Piedmont Lakes

Crystal Clear Tourism on Maggiore and Orta

Piedmont’s lakes are beautiful. They’re a little overrun with tourists for some people’s taste but then something this good isn’t going to go unnoticed.

Piedmont’s lakes are beautiful. They’re a little overrun with tourists for some people’s taste but then something this good isn’t going to go unnoticed. Start with Largo Orta. Santo Giulio is a very special little town. The view across the lake is wonderful and the town is vibrant with good cafes and nice places to eat. The buildings add to this Italian romance of land meeting water with a backdrop of hills and Alps. |  Read more

Finding an Agriturismo

A true Italian invention - the Agriturismo. Is was an idea to help struggling farmers make an extra income and bring back to life crumbling farmhouses. The government handed out (and still do) grants, paying as much as 50% of renovation costs to provide tourists with good quality accommodation and an agricultural experience. And it's really worked!

*The plural of Agriturismo is 'Agriturismi'.

Don't Ignore the Roero Wines

The Roero is much smaller than the Langhe and Monferrato but its passion for wine is no lesser than its more famous neighbours. Here you will find some great wines to enjoy. In fact, the first mention of the Nebbiolo grape on record is in Canale, the principal town of the Roero. It's most popular is l'Arneis.

Arneis (literally: little rascal in Piedmontese) is so called because it's a somewhat difficult variety to grow. It's crisp and floral, and has been grown for centuries in the region. The white wines made from the Arneis grape tend to be dry and full body with notes of pears and apricots.
